Welcome from the Chair

Dear Colleagues,

It is our pleasure to invite you to join the 4th International Online Conference on Nanomaterials (IOCN 2023) after prodigious success of three annual online conferences. IOCN 2023 will be hosted online by:

IOCN 2023 is dedicated to providing a forum for exchanging the latest research results and sharing advanced research methods on nanomaterials. Nanomaterials are materials with typical-size features in the lower nanometer size range and characteristic mesoscopic properties—for example, quantum size effects. These properties make them attractive objects of fundamental research and potential new applications. Many of the things we have been using for a long time contain nanosize components, though we are frequently not aware of them. For instance, mimicking nature’s nanotech is becoming a big business. Many research groups around the world have turned to geckos and mussels in order to prepare adhesives that bind to dry and wet surfaces alike. Numerous technologies in the modern world rely on nanostructures, often inspired by evolution in the natural world. However, there is much unexploited potential left to explore.

The scope of IOCN 2023 on Nanomaterials is to cover the whole breadth of nanomaterials research and provide a forum for presenting and discussing new results. Topics of interest include but are not limited to:

IOCN 2023 will be free of charge for presenters and visitors. There will be an opportunity to publish peer-reviewed and accepted papers in the Special Issue 'Advances in Nanomaterials 2023'. Nanomaterials is pleased to offer a 20% discount on the publication fees for this Special Issue.

Live Sessions Information

During the duration of the conference, three live online sessions will be programmed. The live streaming platform we are using is Zoom. During each session, the participants will have the possibility to ask questions during a Q&A session. Detailed information about the topics and dates will be shared soon.

The live sessions are free of charge. The authors who submit submissions to IOCN 2023 will have priority for the registration (with no extra cost) to the live online sessions with our keynote speakers. If it is not completely full, registration will be open for unregistered participants. Registrations with academic institutional email addresses will be prioritized. The number of participants in the live session is limited but the recording will be made available on Sciforum shortly afterward.

Instructions for Authors

Submissions should be made by authors online by registering with using the "New Submission" function once logged into the system.
Note: An institutional email address is requested especially for the corresponding author. Please submit the abstract with the institutional email address.

1. Scholars interested in participating in the conference can submit their abstract (about 200–300 words) online on this website until 27 January 2023. The Conference Committee will notify authors of the acceptance of the abstract by 17 February 2023.

2. In the case of acceptance, authors will be asked to submit their manuscript (short proceedings paper, 3-6 pages) before 17 March 2023. Optionally, authors of accepted abstracts will be able to submit a poster, a slides presentation (in PDF) and/or a short video presentation (max. 3-5minutes) as supporting material for the paper. Authors will receive a notification about the acceptance of their papers by 31 March 2023.

Note: Before acceptance, the organizing committee will review the full submissions using the powerful text comparison tool: iThenticate. This procedure aims to prevent scholarly and professional plagiarism. Articles with a high repetition rate or a lack of novelty will not be accepted for the conference proceedings.

3. The manuscripts and presentations will be available on for discussion and rating during the time of the conference, from 5 to 19 May 2023.

4. The accepted proceedings papers will probably be published as one dedicated volume in MDPI’s Materials Proceedings journal (ISSN: 2673-4605). Publication of proceedings paper is free of charge.

5. The submission to the Nanomaterials is independent of the conference proceedings and will follow the usual process of the journal, including peer-review, APC, etc. All participants of IOCN 2023 are welcome to submit an extended full paper to a conference Special Issue 'Advances in Nanomaterials 2023' with at least 20% discount on the Article Processing Charges.

Note: After the conference, all submissions will be published on, and only the proceeding paper (3-6 pages) will be published in the MDPI journal Materials Proceedings journal (ISSN: 2673-4605). Publication of proceedings paper is free of charge.
Proceedings Paper
Proceedings papers must be prepared in MS Word (see below) and should be converted into PDF format before submission. The manuscript should be at least 3 pages (incl. figures, tables and references) and should not exceed 6 pages. Carefully read the rules outlined in the 'Instructions for Authors' on the journal website and ensure that your manuscript submission adheres to these guidelines.

Manuscripts for the proceedings issue must have the following organization:

Presentation Slides

Authors are encouraged to prepare a presentation in PowerPoint or similar software, to be displayed online along with the manuscript. Slides can be prepared the same way as for any traditional conference. They should be converted to PDF format before submission.

Video Presentations

Authors are requested to submit video presentations accompanying extended submissions. Videos should be no longer than 3-5 minutes and prepared with one of the following formats: .mp4 / .webm / .ogg (max size: 250Mb). It should be submitted with the full manuscript before 17 March 2023. (full submission deadline).

Posters will be available on this conference website during and after the event. As with papers presented on the conference, participants will be able to ask questions and make comments about the posters. Posters can be presented without an accompanying proceedings paper.

After acceptance, please upload a copy of the proceedings/abstract as a PDF and Word document, in the corresponding fields, and upload the Poster PDF in the field "Presentation PDF (optional)".

Dr. Antonio DI BARTOLOMEO is a full professor of Experimental Condensed Matter Physics and president of the Physics Education Committee at the University of Salerno, Italy, where he teaches semiconductor device physics and nanoelectronics. His present research interests include: optical and electrical properties of nanostructured materials, such as carbon nanotubes, graphene, and 2D materials; van der Waals heterostructures and Schottky junctions; field-effect transistors, non-volatile memories, solar cells, photodetectors, and field emission devices. He completed his PhD in Physics in 1997 at Salerno University, where he held the position of researcher in Experimental Physics before his appointment as a professor. His scientific career started at CERN (CH) with the collaboration of experiments on neutrino oscillations and heavy-ion collisions. He spent several years in the industry as a semiconductor device engineer (ST Microelectronics, Infineon Technologies, and Intel Corporation) and was a guest scientist at IHP-Microelectronics (Germany) and Georgetown University (Washington, DC). He has authored over 150 publications in peer-reviewed journals, two physics textbooks, and two patents. He currently serves as an Editorial Board member for several journals, including MDPI’s Nanomaterials, Sensors and Electronics.

Dr. Guanying Chen has been a professor at the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT), since 2013. He also serves as a research faculty at the Institute for Lasers, Photonics and Biophotonics (ILPB), SUNY Buffalo, since 2011. His research interests focus on lanthanide-doped materials, upconversion, nanocrystals and crystals, biophotonics, and nanostructured solar cells. He has published more than 110 peer-reviewed papers in journals such as Chem. Rev., Chem. Soc. Rev., Acc. Chem. Res., J. Am. Chem. Soc., Adv. Mater., ACS Nano, etc. He has an H index of 47 and more than 11,000 total citations. He received the Top-Notch Young Investigator Award from the Department of the Central Committee of China in 2015, Young Changjiang Professor from Ministry of Education China in 2019, Top 100 National Excellent PhD Dissertation Nomination Award of China in 2011, and the Distinguished Young Investigator Career Award of HIT in 2015. He sits on editorial boards for six SCI journals, including Scientific Reports, Nanomaterials, Crystals, and the Journal of Rare Earths.

Denis Garoli obtained a Master’s Degree in Physics and a Master’s Degree in Biotechnology at Padova University. He was awarded a PhD in Space Science with a thesis on the development of innovative technologies for the environmental monitoring. From 2014 to date, he is serving as a senior researcher at Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT). His interests include plasmonics, biosensing, single-molecule detection and manipulation. He is PI of the FET-OPEN project DNA-FAIRYLIGHTS on DNA Data Storage and of the Marie Curie Doctoral Network DYNAMO on Nanopore Protein Sequencing.

Dr. Ioannis Sarris is a Fluid Mechanics and Magnetohydrodynamics Professor of the Mechanical Engineering Department at the University of West Attica, Greece. Previously, he worked as a group leader at the regional center of advanced technologies and materials at the Palacký University in Olomouc (2012 – 2021) and as an assistant professor at the Department of Analytical chemistry, Palacký University, Olomouc (2008 to 2010). In the years 2011 and 2012, he worked in the department of medicine at the University of Fribourg in Switzerland as a research assistant. Francesca Lionetto received Master degree in Material Engineering at the University of Lecce in Italy in 1999. After working one and half year with Bosch company, both in Italy and Germany, she granted a PhD fellowship in Material Engineering at the University of Lecce in Italy. Between 2002 and 2003 she was a visiting scientist at the University of Nottingham in UK after granting a Marie Curie Fellowship. She received her PhD degree in Materials Engineering in 2004 defending a thesis on an innovative technique for the ultrasonic dynamic mechanical analysis of polymers. Between 2004 and 2012 she was a post-doc at the Department of Innovation Engineering of the University of Salento in Italy. In 2013 she was appointed as an Assistant Professor in Material Science and Engineering at the same Department. Lionetto’s research interest include: i) synthesis and characterization of nanostructured polymers; ii) nanocomposites reinforced with carbon nanotubes; iii) organic-inorganic epoxy-based hybrids produced by sol-gel method; iv) ultrasonic dynamic mechanical analysis for the characterization of the viscoelastic properties of polymers and polymer based composites; v) cure monitorig of thermosetting resins; vi) characterization of biopolymers, such as wood and starch. Since 2005 up today she teaches in the Course “Science and Technology of Materials” for the students of the Bachelor in Technologies for Conservation and Restoration, Faculty of Cultural Heritage at the University of Salento.

Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering Hellenic Mediterranean University Estavromenos, Greece

Dr. Dimitra Vernardou received her Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from the University of Salford in 2005. Her thesis was entitled "The Growth of Thermochromic Vanadium Dioxide Films by Chemical Vapour Deposition". During her Ph.D., she designed, optimized and demonstrated an atmospheric pressure chemical vapour deposition (APCVD) reactor for the growth of VO2 and V2O5 coatings. Following this, she undertook postdoctoral studies in IESL-FORTH before being a research fellow in the Centre of Materials Technology and Photonics-TEI of Crete (CEMATEP) in 2006. As a research fellow, she designed and integrated an APCVD reactor for the growth of VO2 (pure or doped with tungsten), V2O5 and WO3 as coatings for thermochromic and electrochromic applications and lithium-ion batteries. Additionally, she has experience in the structural, optical and morphological analysis of the coatings. Regarding the electrochemical performance of the metal oxides as electrodes, she has carried out extensive studies using cyclic voltammetry to examine the cyclability, specific capacitance, charge and time response. The last three years, she continuously works with electrochemical impedance spectroscopy to investigate the lithium ion intercalation/deintercalation mechanism at the electrode-electrolyte interface. She has published 80 papers in peer reviewed scientific journals with h-index 35 and i10-index 72 (Source: Google Scholar). She currently holds the position of Assistant Professor on Materials for Electrical Energy Efficiency and Storage in the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering of Hellenic Mediterranean University.

Dr. Kharlamova is an experienced materials scientist with an extensive expertise in the development, synthesis and characterization of advanced materials. She acquired 17 years of research experience at research laboratories in recognized universities. She has a strong background in Chemistry, Materials Science, Nanotechnology, Bionanotechnology, Physics and Biophysics. She co-authored about 180 publications: 3 books, 7 book chapters and 66 peer-reviewed research articles (including 14 reviews) and 21 conference proceedings

Dr. Wenyan Yin received her PhD degree from Beijing Institute of Technology (2010). She is currently an Associate Professor at Key Lab for Biomedical Effects of Nanomaterials and Nanosafety of the Institute of High Energy Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). Her research interests mainly focus on design of intelligent nanomaterials, construction of new nanomaterials, nanoscale biosafety and their biomedical applications. Giovanna Rassu is an Associate Professor at the Department of Medicine, Surgery and Pharmacy of the University of Sassari, where she performs her research and teaching activities in the drug delivery field. Her research activity is mainly focused on the development of micro- and nanoparticles for different routes of administration (nasal, oral, and cutaneous), mainly for nose-to-brain drug delivery; these studies are in collaboration with various national and international research groups. She reviews manuscripts submitted to different prestigious journals of the drug delivery categories; she is an Editorial Board Member of Pharmaceutics. She is also the Special Issue Editor of the Special Issue “Liposomes and Lipid Nanovesicular Carriers for Drug Delivery” and Mucoadhesive and Mucosal Drug Delivery Systems Volume II in Pharmaceutics. She is the inventor of a Patent titled "Permeation Cells" (number: 102017000089514; European extension application (PCT / IB2018 / 055726)) suitable for the permeation studies of substances through membranes or tissues.

New perspectives in nanomedicine from biodegradable alloy nanoparticles obtained by laser ablation in liquid
Vincenzo Amendola is Professor of Physical Chemistry at Padova University, where he established and directs the Laser Assisted Synthesis and Plasmonics lab ( His research activity is focused on the mechanisms behind laser processing of colloids and its application to the synthesis of unconventional and metastable nanomaterials, that are exploited for experimental and theoretical investigations in the fields of plasmonics, sensing, nanomedicine and heterogeneous catalysis. He obtained the PhD in Materials Science and Engineering in 2008 and the Italian qualification as Full Professor in 2017, after research experience at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Cambridge University. He is part of the Program Committee of the ANGEL conference series and he is member of the Nanomaterials Editorial Advisory Board. He was honoured with the Levi prize, the Semerano prize, the Young Innovators Award, the Alceste Mion Award and the Belloni prize. He is in the top 100^k scientists of the last “science-wide author databases of standardized citation indicators.

ITODYS Laboratory, Chemistry Department, Faculty of Sciences, Université Paris Cité, Paris, France

Miryana Hémadi is Associate Professor at the ITODYS laboratory, Chemistry Department, Université Paris Cité. Her research focuses on hybrid, inorganic and organic, nanomaterials whose excellent physical and chemical properties, as well as their low toxicity, mean that they can be exploited for a wide variety of applications. Functionalization of these nanomaterials increases their efficacy and specificity. In nanomedecine, this is achieved by binding proteins or other biomolecules to their surface for them to be used for bioimaging, thermal therapy, drug delivery and targeting. She is developing multidisciplinary research, based on physicochemistry and materials science, in close association with biology and the health field.

Eutectic-based ionic liquids: a novel medium for synthesizing metal and metal nanoparticles at low temperature
Dr Azeez Abdullah Barzinjy: was born in Erbil-Iraq. He received his BSc. (Physics) and M.Sc. (Superconducting transmission line) from the University of Salahaddin-Erbil in 1998 and 2004, respectively. He completed his PhD (Materials Science) at the Materials Science centre, University of Leicester/UK in 2014. He is currently Associated Professor at Soran University and teaching in Tishk International University in Iraq. He participated in many international and local conferences as a keynote speaker and he published many highly impact scientific articles. His current research interests include Green Synthesis of Nanoparticles, metal electroplating from novel ionic liquids and investigating their properties, solar selective coating, surface plasmon resonance and nanotechnology. He is currently supervising several master and PhD students in different universities. He Organized 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th Nanotechnology workshop from 2017-2022 with his colleague at Tishk International University. Erbil, Iraq. Dr. Enzheng Shi is currently a tenure-track assistant professor at School of Engineering, Westlake University. He received his bachelor's degree from School of Materials Science & Engineering, Shandong University in 2010, and Ph.D. degree from Department of Materials Science & Engineering, Peking University in 2015. He worked as a postdoc research associate in Iowa State University from 2015 to 2017, and in Purdue University from 2017 to 2020. Dr. Shi is mainly engaged in the design, synthesis, assembly and application exploration of new electronic materials and energy materials.

The art of detecting single photons with superconducting nanowire.
Dr. Ronan Gourgues graduated in applied physics at the Universite Pierre et Marie Curie in Paris, France. He obtained a PhD at Single Quantum as part of a Marie-Curie International Training Network called Phonsi. Since the end of it he joined Single Quantum as a full-time research engineer in the development team. He is in charge of internal and European projects and he makes sure that the laboratory is functioning properly.
